About Us

Ngara District is one of the eight (08) districts of Kagera Region, Tanzania. The inhabitants of Ngara are the Hangaza and Washubi peoples and speak the Hangaza and Kishubi languages. Before being named Ngara, it was known as Kibimba, meaning Wilderness. The actual origin of the name Ngara is a place that was used for meetings, which were held under large trees called iminyinya yingara. Thus, the Umunyinya Tree was planted by the Ngara District Council as a memorial, as it bears the name of the Ngara district.
