Zambart is an independent Zambian research organization whose headquarters are at Ridgeway Campus in Lusaka. Zambart is globally renowned for its interdisciplinary research on HIV and Tuberculosis (TB) and has contributed to HIV and TB policy and practice at national and global levels. Zambart’s research portfolio now includes a broader scope of urgent public health issues.

Zambart is inviting applications for Social Scientist Yaba Guy Che – study position (with a potential PhD opportunity). Zambart will be leading a five-year project funded by the UK NIHR – Yaba Guy Che Study. The Yaba Guy Che Study aims to implement and evaluate a co-developed, digitally supported multi-disease intervention for men to overcome health systems barriers. The intervention is made up of community-based booths that men can visit to discuss health concerns, community-based vending machines dispensing health-related products and an app for accessing health results and information via mobile phone’ The intervention will be delivered over two years following a period of formative research. By overcoming health system barriers, the intervention aims to improve men’s knowledge of their HIV status and access to NCD screening services; the study also aims to look at variations in the outcomes by socio-economic factors.

The Yaba Guy Che consortium brings together researchers from five institutions globally. The study consists of five work packages (WP), including community-led monitoring (WP2), Digital Health Systems (WP3), Implementation and Systems Research (WP4), and Impact and Economic Evaluation (WP5).

The study is recruiting a social scientist – Yaba Guy Che study of WP3- Digital Health System. The selected candidates on the positions below will also have opportunities within the positions to enrol for PhD at a reputable University to develop their PhD work within their work packages.

Position: Social scientist – Yaba Guy Che study

Reporting to: Zambian PI and co-leads of WP3- Digital Health System

The Social Scientist will work closely with the implementation coordinator and principal investigator. This position is ideal for an early to mid-career researcher who is committed to social science, HIV/NCD service integration and men’s access to health services. They should also demonstrate ambition for academic progression and to enrol for a PhD.

Job Purpose:

The job holder will manage and oversee the social science activities, co-ordinate qualitative and research across WP3 and WP4 and liaise with other WP when and if necessary. The Social Scientist will support the Zambian Principal Investigator (PI) and the co-leads of WP3 and WP4 and will be expected to participate in wider study team tasks. There will be the opportunity within this position to develop a PhD as part of WP3 Digital Health system. Time and budget will be protected for PhD endeavours and deliverables.

Roles and Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Provide oversight for qualitative data collection activities linked to WP3 and WP4
  • Actively engage with relevant Zambian stakeholders at all levels (community, district, provincial, national) and with people living with HIV
  • Working with regulatory office at Zambart to manage ethics and institutional review board (IRB) submissions.
  • Working with the PI, manage quality-assurance activities for data collection, including scheduling and documenting senior review, quality control of data, and editing
  • Supervise and line manage the qualitative research team
  • Support project budget and administration management
  • Provide written progress reports of project activities to the Principal Investigator
  • Maintain project oversight, ensuring all regulatory standards are adhered to and run in accordance with established guidelines
  • Support and Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Support the project funder reporting and review processes
  • Play a lead role in analysis and publications linked to the project deliverables
  • Represent the project at national and global events
  • Develop a PhD study protocol linked to WP3 and focused on social science
  • Submit the research protocol to in-country and other relevant ethics committees
  • Ethically conduct PhD specific activities, including recruitment, data collection, data management and data analysis
  • Be flexible to undertake any other tasks required
  • Qualifications and experience

Essential requirements

  • Master’s level degree in social sciences from a reputable University
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in HIV/SRH research
  • Evidence of writing skills such as by scientific publications
  • Computer literate including experience with qualitative data management software(s)
  • Fluency in English; Nyanja and Bemba
