Role Overview
The Senior Drill and Blast Engineer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and optimizing all underground drilling and blasting operations. Reporting to the Technical Service Superintendent, the role ensures safe, efficient, and productive execution of drill and blast activities while adhering to Barrick’s policies, safety standards, and operational procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Drill & Blast Operations

Manage drill and blast activities at BGML and other designated sites, ensuring efficiency, productivity, and adherence to safety and environmental policies.

Prepare drill and charge plans for long-hole stopping operations underground.

Monitor blast quality, optimizing fragmentation, and minimizing overbreaks/underbreaks.

Track performance against schedules, budgets, and KPIs.

Assist in budgeting and forecasting for explosives and drilling consumables.
Fleet & Resource Management

Effectively manage drill fleet allocation and productivity.

Coordinate with explosives suppliers to ensure product quality and stock levels.

Identify opportunities for optimization and cost reduction in drill and blast operations.
Reporting & Continuous Improvement

Prepare weekly and monthly drill and blast reports for reconciliation and management review.

Implement continuous improvement initiatives for drill and blast activities.

Ensure QA/QC checks are completed and recorded prior to blasting operations.

Provide technical advice and support to improve operational performance.
Safety & Compliance

Promote compliance with operating standards and safe work procedures.

Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments.

Ensure adherence to Mines Health & Safety Act and Barrick safety standards.
Requirements
Education & Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering.
-
Registered Mining or Professional Engineer.
-
Valid Blasting Certificate.
-
Mine Overseers/Captain Certificate of Competency or equivalent is an added advantage.
Experience
-
Minimum 5 years progressive underground mining experience, including large-scale drilling and blasting operations.

Experience managing drill fleets in challenging underground environments.

Prior experience as a Drill & Blast Coordinator is highly desirable.
Skills & Competencies

Knowledge of Mines Health & Safety Act and underground mining operations.

Strong planning, analytical, and organizational skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
