About Us

The Lay Volunteers International Association (LVIA) is an Italian non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to international cooperation and solidarity. Founded in 1966, LVIA works to address extreme poverty and promote sustainable development in several African countries, including Tanzania. The organization is committed to fostering dialogue between Italian and African communities and supporting local social change.

In Tanzania, LVIA has been operating for over 30 years. Its main offices are located in the Dodoma Region, with projects spanning across districts like Kongwa, Chamwino, and Bahi, as well as in Zanzibar.

Key Areas of Work and Services

LVIA’s work in Tanzania focuses on empowering local communities through a variety of development projects. Their primary sectors of activity include:

• Water and Sanitation (WASH): LVIA is heavily involved in improving access to clean water and hygiene. This includes the implementation of water supply systems such as wells, aqueducts, and rainwater harvesting, as well as the design and construction of sanitation systems.
• Agriculture and Food Systems: The organization supports community development through initiatives in agriculture. This includes promoting family farming, strengthening producer associations, and working on projects to improve nutrition and food security by supporting diversified and sustainable food systems.
• Environmental Management: LVIA works with local authorities to improve waste management and promote environmental education. They also focus on sustainable energy solutions for homes, schools, and hospitals in marginalized areas.
• Health and Social Services: The NGO provides support to improve health services through the training of medical staff and the strengthening of healthcare facilities. They also focus on social inclusion and community development.

LVIA works closely with local partners and institutions, including government bodies, to implement its programs. The organization’s long-term presence in the country allows for continuous dialogue and collaboration to support community-led initiatives.
