About Us

The Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation has a very long history, starting with Radio SAUTI YA DAR ES SALAAM, which was established on July 1, 1951, broadcasting its broadcasts in Swahili once a week.

In 1955 Sauti ya Dar es Salaam, which was based in Kichwele Street, was renamed Tanganyika Broadcasting Services (TBS) and moved to Pugu Road, now Nyerere Road. TBS gained great popularity in the East African region due to its broadcasts, receiving news from Japan, Finland and New Zealand.

On 01 July, 1956 TBS changed its name to Tanganyika Broadcasting Corporation (TBC). After the efforts to fight for Tanganyika’s independence and the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, TBC was renamed Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam (RTD), on 01 July, 1965. RTD was used to promote and provide education on the Arusha Declaration and the politics of Socialism and Independence. It had three channels which were the National channel, the Business channel and the English channel (External Services of Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam).

In order to improve the quality of programs and strengthen broadcasting by government agencies, on June 12, 2004, the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TUT) was formed which merged Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam and National Television (TVT). This helped to bring these government broadcasting agencies under the leadership and coordination of a single management.

Due to the desire to accelerate the intended changes within a short period of time, and to make it a public broadcasting organization, TUT was renamed Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) from July, 2007. This Tanzanian broadcasting organization was officially launched by the fourth term President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on March 26, 2008.
