DIRECTOR GOVERNMENT COMMUNICATION

Benefits:

  • Optional contributory medical aid scheme with the Botswana Public Officers’ Medical Aid Scheme (BPOMAS) (Government pays 50% and employee pays 50%)

  • Government will also contribute 50% of the medical aid cover for individuals who are already members of a different Medical Aid Scheme other than the BPOMAS

  • A contract of 24 to 36 months, with a gratuity of 30% payable upon expiry of contract.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in communication, Journalism, Public Relation, Social Sciences or any other related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of sixteen (16) years’ experience in the Media or Mass Communication, two (2) of which should have been at (E2) level in the public sector or its equivalent in the parastatal or private sector.

Main purpose of the job:

  • To provide strategic government communications, coordinate and manage government communication functions and activities, and provide leadership and direction to government communicators.

Key Performance Areas:

  1. Develops communication strategies, guides, plans and standards to standardize and integrate government communications across all the 18 Ministries.

  2. Advocates for policies that strengthen government relations with internal and external stakeholders guided by the government Communication framework.

  3. Strengthen relations between government and the communities around the country with a view to promote national pride, peace and strong community relations.

  4. Proficiency in using digital and data analytics platforms and social media strategies to derive insights and inform decision making across the broader government communication space.

  5. Contributes toward a strong image and reputation of Botswana at both local, regional and international level.

  6. Coordinates implementation of Crisis communication strategy to address urgent public relations issues as they arise.

  7. Coordinates and monitors the formulation and implementation of media strategies and initiatives such as media tours, press conferences and public outreach.

  8. Monitors local and international media for news on Botswana and advises on appropriate responses.

  9. Provides analysis of monitored media reports to relevant stakeholders.

  10. Prepares and disseminates timely accurate information to the media and public.

  11. Monitors and evaluates staff performance by way of staff and their achievements are undertaken in accordance with Public Service PMS and agreed schedules.

  12. Fosters continual improvement of staff engagement by providing on-the job training, coaching and mentoring, ensuring that all the staff meet or exceed the requirements of their performance contracts.

  13. Undertakes any other related duties as may be assigned by Management.
