MEDICAL OFFICER
BACKGROUND:
The Botswana-Baylor Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence (COE) is a public private partnership between Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital and the Government of Botswana. Botswana-Baylor Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence (Botswana-Baylor COE) has two main operational arms being Paediatric Infectious Disease Clinic (PIDC) that serves HIV-infected children, adolescents, young adults and their families and Paediatric Haematology and Oncology (PHO) that provides treatment and care for patients with paediatric cancer and haematological disorders.
ROLE DEFINITION:
The post is primarily clinical with exposure to training, research and outreach services. In carrying out these responsibilities, the incumbent will also serve as a key contact and liaison officer for day to day programming, administrative, management, development, coordination and collaboration with other clinicians and partners.
CORE ACTIVITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Provision of clinical services to all children attending the Trust and outreach sites

Supervision of clinical medical students and other subordinate staff
-
Participate in and research the Trust’s educational activities
-
Provision of in-service and pre-service teaching and training
-
Provision of inpatient consultation services to Trust and Government clinical students in outreach hours
-
Participate in quality improvement activities and time activities in the Trust
-
Any other duties as may be described by supervisor

Orient medical trainees including pediatricians, medical students, interns, and others on all aspects of the PHO service
-
Present case summaries and educational reviews at educational meetings including when applicable, Tumour Board, Journal Club, Grand Rounds and others
Responsibility D: Participate in the conduct of research as per standard operating procedures (SOPs) and IRB-approved protocols

Liaise with research assistants, coordinators, and nurses in conducting research related to PHO and according to SOPs

Perform research procedures as may be indicated in research SOPs

Ensure ethical conduct of research allocated in PHO areas, and report any suspicion of unethical research activity to the Paediatric Haematology Oncologist as part of the research project or not

Interpret and present research results as may be required by the Executive Director
Responsibility E: Participate in quality improvement activities and initiatives in PHO

Identify QI needs in the PHO program

Initiate, design and conduct QI plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles
-
Present QI findings and recommendations to the PHO multidisciplinary team
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Job holder should have: A medical Degree e.g MB ChB and a license to practice medicine in Botswana as a Medical Practitioner

Experience: Successful completion of medical internship

Level IV English (Fluent both written and Spoken), be in good health professional standing

Proficiency in the country’s primary local language
