SENIOR SPECIALIST – LOGISTICS & CUSTOMS
BASIC FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:
To manage, coordinate, and optimise inbound and outbound logistics operations, including customs compliance and documentation processes, ensuring efficient, timely, and cost-effective delivery of goods and materials in line with company policies, international trade regulations, and mining project timelines.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Your key accountabilities include:
- Coordinating all aspects of logistics including transportation, off site warehousing, and material handling for local and international shipments.
- Ensuring full compliance with customs regulations, import/ export laws and all relevant statutory requirements.
- Liaising with clearing agents, freight forwarders, and government bodies (eg. BURS, BITC, Department of Customs) to ensure efficient customs clearance.
- Monitoring shipment schedules to avoid delays in critical supply deliveries to site.
- Preparing, reviewing and maintaining shipping documentation including commercial invoices, packing lists, import permits, certificates of origin and waybills.
- Managing bonded warehousing processes and ensuring accurate record keeping and reporting.
- Providing expert advice to internal stakeholders on customs duties, tariffs, HS codes, and trade agreements.
- Conducting regular audits of logistics and customs processes to identify and implement improvement opportunities.
- Supporting vendor performance evaluation and managing logistics service providers to meet agreed SLAs and KPls.
- Resolving logistics bottlenecks, coordinating and expediting of priority consignments.
- Ensuring accurate costing of freight and customs charges for budget control and reporting purposes.
- Training and guiding internal staff on customs procedures and international shipping practices.
- Tracking and reporting on targets achieved against the business model, including cost saving initiatives
- Training and mentorship to subordinates to ensure development and guidance where necessary
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, International Trade, or related field
- Minimum of 8-10 years’ experience in logistics and customs, preferably within a mining or heavy industry environment
- Certification in Customs Clearance or Freight Forwarding (e.g., FIATA, IATA, WCO) is an added advantage
- Membership of a professional logistics or supply chain body (e.g., CILT, SAPICS) is desirable
- Proven experience managing imports, exports, and bonded warehousing
- Demonstrated ability to manage freight forwarders and customs brokers
- Track record of cost optimisation and process improvement in logistics
