Brief Job Summary:
To participate in the preparation, documentation, and dispensing of drugs and other supplies to hospital units and clients. This role requires a professional demeanor, excellent communication skills, and empathy to ensure patients are accurately counseled, improving adherence to treatment and guidelines.

Key Duties & Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, package, label, and dispense drugs against validated prescriptions or orders, adhering to national standards and C-CARE procedures accurately and timely.
  • Prepare documentation and labels for all products in line with C-CARE standard operating procedures.
  • Receive and evaluate prescriptions/orders from patients or hospital staff, ensuring compliance with departmental protocols.
  • Verify that prescription details meet legal requirements and liaise with medical/nursing staff as needed.
  • Ensure dispensed medicines are checked against prescriptions and consult prescribing doctors for any doubts about medication appropriateness, dosage, or labeling.
  • Communicate treatment information to patients and relay accurate details to team members.
  • Monitor drug expiry dates and ensure timely rotation or use in wards/clinics before expiry.
  • Conduct regular stock checks and stock takes to maintain adequate medical supplies (drugs, sundries, fluids, etc.) and remove expired items. This includes checking stock in:
    • Theatre & Sterilization
    • Pharmacy cages and dispensary
    • Stock cupboards
    • Wards (OPD, IPDs)
  • Ensure refrigerated items are stored at appropriate temperatures and regularly monitor/record fridge temperatures.
  • Maintain accurate data entries and documentation (e.g., stock cards, Navision) for prescriptions/supplies to ensure accountability.
  • Be fully accountable for drug usage in the pharmacy and report any abuse of medical resources.
  • Answer phone calls per C-CARE etiquette, assess queries, respond, or refer to appropriate staff.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as requested and stay updated via inter/intranet, noticeboards, etc.
  • Check for contraindications or harmful drug interactions (e.g., in pregnancy) to ensure patient safety.
  • Dispose of used/unwanted materials (e.g., expired drugs) per C-CARE SOPs.
  • Participate in unit assessments and internal audits to ensure service quality.
  • Ensure safe storage of materials/equipment and maintain adequate stock takes.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Pharmacist or Pharmacy team leader.

Person Specifications:
Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Pharmacy Technology.
  • Registration with the Uganda Allied Health Professionals Council.

Years of Experience:

  • At least 1 year of dispensing experience.

Skills Required:

  • Knowledge of key pharmacology terms and standards.
  • Dispensing experience is an added advantage.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Excellent customer care and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of key drug indications, regimens, and interactions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Strong organizational skills with multitasking ability.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in dispensing medications.
