Zambart is an independent Zambian research organization whose headquarters are at Ridgeway Campus in Lusaka. Zambart is globally renowned for its interdisciplinary research on HIV and Tuberculosis (TB) and has contributed to HIV and TB policy and practice at national and global levels. Zambart’s research portfolio now includes a broader scope of urgent public health issues.

Zambart is inviting applications for Epidemiologist and Coordinator (with potential PhD opportunities.) Zambart will be leading a five-year project funded by the UK NIHR – Yaba Guy Che Study. The Yaba Guy Che Study aims to implement and evaluate a co-developed, digitally supported multi-disease intervention for men to overcome health systems barriers. The intervention is made up of community-based booths that men can visit to discuss health concerns, community-based vending machines dispensing health-related products and an app for accessing health results and information via mobile phone’ The intervention will be delivered over two years following a period of formative research. By overcoming health system barriers, the intervention aims to improve men’s knowledge of their HIV status and access to NCD screening services; the study also aims to look at variations in the outcomes by socio-economic factors.

The Yaba Guy Che consortium brings together researchers from five institutions globally. The study consists of five work packages (WP), including community-led monitoring (WP2), Digital Health Systems (WP3), Implementation and Systems Research (WP4), and Impact and Economic Evaluation (WP5).

The study is recruiting the Epidemiologist and Coordinator WP5 – Yaba Guy Che Study to work on Impact and Economic evaluation (WP5). The selected candidate on the position below will also have an opportunity within the position to enrol for PhD at a reputable University to develop their PhD work within their work packages.

Position: Epidemiologist and Coordinator WP5 – Yaba Guy Che Study

Reporting to: Zambian PI and co-leads of WP5 Impact and Economic evaluation

The Epidemiologist and Coordinator of WP5 will work closely with the Implementation coordinator, WP5 co-leads and the principal investigators.

Job Purpose:

The job holder will manage and oversee the implementation of the time location sampling surveys and mapping activities, co-ordinate research across WP5 and liaise with other WP when and if necessary. The Epidemiologist will support the Zambian Principal Investigator (PI) and the co-leads of WP5 and will be expected to participate in wider study team tasks. There will be the opportunity within this position to develop a PhD as part of WP5 Impact and Economic Evaluation. Time and budget will be protected for PhD endeavours and deliverables.

Roles and Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Provide high quality, epidemiological and statistical support to the Yaba Guy Che Study
  • Contribute to a study protocol on the impact evaluation of the Yaba Guy Che intervention for submission to in-country and other relevant ethics committees
  • Design questionnaires for the baseline and endline time location sampling surveys
  • Coordinate and oversee the rigorous conduct of the baseline and endline time location sampling surveys
  • Provide support in processing and analysing epidemiological data, including routine service delivery data collected through digital platforms
  • Develop a PhD study protocol linked to WP5 for submission to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and focused on epidemiology
  • Submit the PhD research protocol to in-country and other relevant ethics committees.
  • Ethically conduct PhD specific activities, including recruitment, data collection, data management and data analysis

Qualifications and Experience

Essential requirements

  • Master’s level degree in degree in epidemiology, medical statistics, biostatistics or public health (with evidence of having completed courses on epidemiology and statistics for epidemiology)
  • Have research experience and an interest in HIV/NCD service integration and men’s health.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the conduct of epidemiological studies.
  • Proficient in scripting with Stata, R or other programming languages for epidemiological data analysis
  • Experience handling complex epidemiological data, including data management and analysis.
  • Evidence of writing skills such as scientific publications
  • Fluency in English and some Zambian languages
